Organized Kids: Raising the next generation of organizers

Happy Weekend...YAY!
How was your week?  Are you doing anything fun this weekend?

We have another sweet guest poster today, Mary, from Organization Matters.  She is an amazing blogger, organizer and personal friend.  She is here today to talk about organizing for kids!

Izzy (4) explaining to me why she organized her crayons in that color order. Her reasoning included "these two colors like each other". After I took this picture, she asked for my help to turn all of the crayons where the labels face outward. Some kids take to organizing a little more naturally than others - but all children, and all people, are capable of learning."

Yesterday I finished with my bi-annual project of helping each of my girls deep clean their rooms. I spread this project out over different days and times, because I wanted to make sure I had a fresh reserve of patience for each child. Because, lets face it, young children won’t have quick decision-making powers or super focus or long attention spans for cleaning. A lot of parents might use that as an excuse to deep clean a child’s room for them, because that would be way quicker and easier! BUT, this process is about so much more than the result of a clean room, we are building skills in our children so that as adults they don’t have to struggle with disorganization.
Let’s get into the details of how to make these deep cleans successful educational experiences.

First of all, deep cleaning each child’s room should happen at least a few times a year so that any buildup can’t get too awful. I suggest making traditions out of it (like I talk about in Organized Homes: Find your reason to purge). In our home, we do it two times a year, in the spring and fall, because my girls get the proceeds from selling their unwanted toys at the bi-annual consignment sale or neighborhood garage sale.
How it works:

-You’ll need 3 bags or boxes, so that you can separate things that are leaving the room into 3 categories, TRASH, DONATE/SELL, PUT AWAY.

-Send other children to play elsewhere and don’t bring distractions (like a phone) into your child’s room. You want to give your child your undivided attention.

-If the bed isn’t made, make that together.

-Start with pulling everything out of the closet, drawers, dresser tops, and other crevices. Bring it all out to the center of the room and start sorting into the 3 boxes.

-Put items you are keeping away, making sure to keep “like with like”.

-Finish this off with dusting and vacuuming, and the job is done.

The plan sounds easy enough, right?

Kind of.

The hard part is actually letting your children feel in charge of what they keep and what is trash.

I have varying levels of organization within my children. One personality in general wants to keep everything. Over time I’ve already noticed an improvement in her ability to let go!

*Organization can be learned, it does not have to be instinctive!

So, when this child wants to keep something that I think might be trash or is no longer of use to her, I gently tell her my opinions about WHY it might be trash or WHY I think she doesn’t need it.

This is where that reserve of patience is needed, because we have to go slow and give our children a chance to process. The most important part is: honor their choice without judgement. And watch out for the judgement we give with facial expressions and our tone of voice.

I’ve noticed that when my daughter feels in control and not on the defensive, she relaxes and actually gets rid
of a ton more!

When we stop to explain the WHYs of getting rid of things, that is when our children start to learn vital organizing skills and practice asking themselves important questions.

Would this be of use to anyone? (trash)

Do I use this anymore? (donate/sell)

Do I still love this or have my tastes changed? (decorative or whimsical items)

How and when will I use this? (keepers)

Raising the next generation of organizers doesn’t end with the bi-annual deep cleans, there is some maintenance involved.
Put your kids regularly in charge of cleaning their own space. Each of my girls is lucky enough to have their own room, so their personal space is clearly defined. If your children share a room, you may want to start by helping your children understand the boundaries of their personal space, and consequently, their area of responsibility in their room. Maybe your child’s area is half the closet, their own bed and dresser, and the floor space next to the bed. You don’t need to partition anything off with tape, but it is good for children to have clear expectations, so when we say “go clean your room”, they know what that means.

Important: STOP YOURSELF FROM CLEANING FOR THEM!

You are not helping them, you are handicapping them.

None of my children’s rooms are as organized or clean as if I had done it myself.

Still, I can honestly say that it doesn’t bother me.

Their rooms are clean enough.

They clean them once a week, including dusting and vacuuming.
Some kids take to this a lot differently, just like personalities vary so much from person to person. My youngest is so organized that Matt and I often joke about how we are raising her to take over my organizing business when she is 12.

My real hope, however, is that by then I’ll have 3 little professional organizers, 1 who came by the talent naturally and 2 who came by the talent with a lot of work, coaching, and love.

Thanks so much Mary!  Isn't she awesome??

NATURAL BODY DETOXIFICATION TIPS

Every day your body disposes of toxins from the metabolism of food, fluids, medications, and even the air you breathe.  Your liver, kidneys, lungs, skin, and digestive system all play important roles to filter, inactivate, and remove toxic by-products and waste materials out of the body.

What can you do to enhance your body’s natural processes?  Well, the good news is that it’s really not that hard to improve your body’s detox systems—and the result is that you will most likely have more energy, fewer skin issues, and fewer minor digestive complaints.  The starting point is a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.  I strongly urge folks to stay away from fast foods, as eating chemical-laden, often fried foods adds a HUGE burden of toxins for your body to process!  Vegetables and whole grains are rich in fiber and help bind toxins and harmful metabolites so they can be excreted.

Here are five tips to support your body’s detoxification systems:

Eat more whole grains.  When choosing breads and cereals, look for phrases such as “100% whole wheat/whole grain,” and choose breads that provide at least 3 grams of fiber per serving, as well as cereals that provide at least 5 grams fiber per serving.
•Satisfy your sweet tooth with fruit—not sodas.  Fresh fruit is generally low in calories but high in fiber.  One cup of fresh blackberries or raspberries has about 8 grams of fiber.  One medium-sized pear or apple has 4 grams.
Eat your veggies.  Vegetables provide vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and fiber.  One artichoke has 5 grams of fiber, and a potato (eaten with the skin) provides 5 grams.
•Ladle up some legumes.  Beans and legumes are low in fat and versatile (great in soup, on salads, or as a vegetarian entree).  A serving of beans provides about 6 to 8 grams of fiber.
Drink more water.  We recommend at least six glasses of plain water per day.  Carry a water bottle with you (make sure it’s BPA free) and commit to refilling it at least three times per day!  Your
digestive system and your skin will thank you.

What do you do for your skin?

Have a great day!

They mixed up our two houses, and put some of our previous house rooms inside our new fixer farmhouse, which I find kinda funny.  I wish it were that easy to do in real life!  Shazam!!

Alas, we are still plugging away on the house over here, so there’s nothing new to show on that front.  Sorry it’s been super slow on the blog.  Raising six children and gutting a house at the same time has a way of filling up the days.  ;)

Twice Owned Tuesday and a Guest Post

 Welcome to my

99th

TWICE OWNED TUESDAY
PARTY!

HOG

Welcome back!  Can you believe that this is my 99th party??  WOW!  Time flies!

First, I want to thank you for all your sweet comments from last week about my baby Andrew!  We are doing great and I am still trying to heal.  The kids love him and he is already growing so much!

Second, I have an awesome guest post for you today!  It is a great transformation for our Twice Owned Tuesday Party!

Everyone, meet Alli, from Raising Daisies!!

Hi everyone! I'm Alli and I am so happy to be guest blogging here today at House of Grace! I am a stay at home mommy to two precious girls, 4 dogs, and one cool cat.  I left my successful marketing career to pursue a more family friendly career in Education.  I blog at Raising Daisies to share our tirades, trials, and triumphs while we raise our children in a healthy, happy home in the country.

When we found out we were going to have a new baby, my mind immediately went to our three year old.  It was time for her to move from the nursery to a "big girl room".  I began searching for inspiration and, not surprisingly, found it in a Pottery Barn catalog.  And we all know that trying to make a room look like a Pottery Barn catalog can get pretty pricey.

As luck would have it, my mother-in-law told us about an antique bed buried in her garage that had belonged to Aunt Alice.  Aunt Alice was a beloved part of my husband's family (and our youngest daughter's namesake).  I have heard stories of love and laughter for years.  It seemed so fitting that, four generations later, this could be our daughter's bed.

The only problem was the bed looked like this...

How was I going to get it to look like this?

Photo from PotteryBarn.com

After extensive research I found out there is an easy way and a hard way to paint old furniture.  Of course, I chose the easy way and prayed it would work.

First, I gave the bed a good cleaning with a strong all purpose cleaner.

Then I lightly sanded all the pieces with a medium grit sandpaper just to rough up the surface a bit so the paint will adhere better.  This is the difference between the "easy way" and the "hard way".  Some will say that you have to remove all of the old stain from the wood which takes a LOT more sanding.  With all the details on this bed, that kind of sanding would have taken a year, so I decided to take try the "easy way".

Next, I gave the pieces one last good wipe down to remove all the sanding debris and gave it a good coat of primer.  (sorry, I don't have pictures of this step. My husband took over before I got them).

Because this was a child's bed and will see a lot of years of wear and tear, our handy paint guy (ask Sherwin Williams!) suggested we go with a glossy oil paint.  Once dry, oil paint is hard as a rock, easy to clean, and can take a beating much better than acrylic.

Because of all the detail in the bed, we decided to invest in a paint sprayer rather than try to brush paint.  Boy, we are so glad we did. The painting was a breeze and the finish is super smooth.

After the bed was painted, we allowed it to dry and cure for a week to ensure a nice hard, durable surface and viola!

This bed...

is now this bed!

Not too shabby if I say so myself! Now our "big girl" has her own "big girl room" that she loves.  Her favorite part of her room is her bed.

I can see Aunt Alice smiling down from above.

It was great being here today. Stop by and see us at raising-daisies@blogspot.com or follow us on Facebook

Our First Week as a Family of 6

Happy Monday!

I hope that you all had a great weekend and Father's Day!

Today, I just wanted to hop in and share a few family photos from the week!  I can't believe we have a family of 6 now!! WOW!!  We grew fast, lol!

I am so in love with my new little Andrew!  I was lucky last week because Scott took the whole week off and did EVERYTHING for me while I was able to rest and nurse!  (Nursing can be a full-time job by itself.)

Here is a photo of Andrew sleeping!  He is an amazing sleeper so far. :)
(He is such a fly catcher, hehe!)

He is making a face here but this was taken on his one week birthday! He is getting so big!

This was my view from the couch all week! Scott in the kitchen, folding laundry, cooking, cleaning, etc.  His comments kept cracking me up all week.  I told him to stop making me laugh because it hurt.  He thinks my job as a "stay-at-home" mom is A LOT of work!  He would say stuff like, "I just finished  cleaning breakfast and now they are ready for a snack!" lol!!  He decided that he was spending too much time cleaning and doing laundry so he stopped and wondered what happen to the house, ha!  I think it was the messiest I even saw it.  I didn't care or say anything.  He is not used to cooking and such plus he wanted to play with the other kids a lot which he did.

He took the three oldest kids to the pool all by himself!

Plus, he potty trained Matthew by himself!  I tried and quit like three times by Matthew listened to Scott!  Plus, he bribed him with cheese crackers and cookies (something I didn't do.)  Anyway,  it worked like a charm and now I don't have to do that!

The kids fought over the baby!  Of course, Grace held Andrew the most.  She is such a little mom!

Daddy was able to get some baby lovin' too!
(Look at that smile.)

We feel so blessed and love him so much!

We also had a great Father's Day!

Since it has been so hot out, the kids have been playing with water toys all week!

Scott joined in on the fun, ha!

He did require lots of coffee, lol!

So there you go!

That was our week in a nutshell!  We are transitioning better that I thought.

I will let you know how this week goes.

What did you do last week?

What do you have planned for this week?

Have a great day!
