Coffee Table Part 3

Ah a half day Friday.  I took the opportunity to spend a little time in the shop this afternoon.  I was able to complete the base of the table.  I also got it stained.

I also got it stained.......

Not only did I get it stained I got it attached to the top and then got the top stained.  I am not waiting on the whole thing to finish drying.  Once it is finished drying I will spray it with some satin poly and bring it inside.

Coffee Table Part 2

I had a little time in the shop last night and was able to get the legs cut, shaped and sanded.  I also took off most of the first pass of stain.  My wife and I then proceeded to beat the heck out of the table top and today I will finish sand the top and re-stain everything.  However first I am going to layout the skirting on the bottom of the table and use a method I haven't used before for attaching table tops.  I am going to use the Kreg Pocket hole system to attach it.  I am trying different ways of attaching the tops so that I can decide which way I like best.  Once I have that all together I will stain the top and then the base separately and then attach the two.

Below are a couple of updated pictures

What's the old saying with the cat out of the house the mouse will play.... Well I am playing Coffee Table Style

Earlier today I posted the sketchup build of the coffee table I am going to build.  Well tonight I got to finish up the top woodworking wise and start on the finish.  So far I have one coat of stain on.  I have done the preliminary distressing. Now I need to sand the whole thing again and take my fun bag of screws and whack the crap out of the top of it and stain it again.  Here are a few progress pics I should be able to finish things up in the next few days.

Coffee Table Diagram

I have officially started the coffee table.  Most of the top is now glued up and sitting in clamps.  I need to finish the breadboard pieces and get them glued on.  I will be using biscuits for this as well.  The top is made from reclaimed 2x4's and it joined by biscuits 3 per board about ever 7 or 8 inches.  I completed the diagram that I am using to build the coffee table it is going to end up being 42" wide by 20" deep x 19" high.  It is again a modified knockoff of the table from Knock Off Wood.  At the request of my wife I changed the legs a little bit so they do not look bulky as well as I changed the way the skirting works.  There will be a 2" offset from the edge of the table top to the outside face of the skirting.

The legs also have a slight taper on them.  You can get fancy and build a taper jig for the table saw or use a bandsaw to cut the taper.  The easiest way would be do use a jigsaw.  The taper starts 5" down the 18" leg and comes in about 22/32" you can play with those dimensions to get the exact look you want.  Just make sure you leave enough for the legs to be stable.

Here is a picture of the finished diagram:

Coffee Table Start

Taking another queue from Ana over at KnockOffWood I am building a Coffee table similar to the Hyde Coffee Table featured on her blog.  I am working on modified plans that show the changes I made.  I will get those posted in the next day or so along with some progress pics of the current build.  I was able to glue up most of the top yesterday and just need to pop by Lowes and get some 1x3 boards.

On a side not I am picking up a Start Capacitor for the saw today.  I am hoping that resolves the issue

I also was messing around with another pen over the weekend.

Here is what came out: Sorry about the horrible picture.
