UNDERWATER

Sometimes what I work on really gets me down.

This video buoyed me up.

(Again, the experience is way better if you watch the HD video at Vimeo.)

Milk Crates

I love our local junk store.  It’s run by an old man who only takes cash.  I think he visits garage sales and takes what’s left over at the end of the day… which is mostly junk.  He piles the newest wares in haphazard fashion outside his shop for all to see.  But you know what?  His lazy marketing scheme works.

We’ve driven by and had to stop more times than I can count.  Once in a while there’s a real treasure.  Remember the vintage desk chair in the boy’s room?  It’s from there.  And my latest drive-by find are these old milk crates.

They are now sitting atop our fridge and holding my stash of cookbooks.

August Fields

When I first started this home décor blog, it was with the intention of documenting the constructing of our new home.  We had grand plans of moving to a village type community and building a historic-inspired home.  I just knew if I was ever going to start a design blog, this would be the time to do it!

Well, things have changed for us due to the economy and bad housing market, so we are staying put for now.  But Sara over at August Fields has done just what we intended…  They recently put the finishing touches on building a dream home, and documented the process of how they went about it.

Well, they just  moved in, and their kitchen is jaw dropping:

Check out the painted brick walls and wood beams!

If I ever went as far as to covet a fridge, this would be the one:

sarakitchen6

You have to see what’s going on in their boy’s room:

IMG_0178

This is something I’ve always longed to do…. fill a room with built-in bunks.  Leave it to Sara to actually implement it.  So fun!  Can’t wait to see it all finished.

Remember a few days ago I posted about our drinking glass system?  Well, Sara has come up with the ultimate solution… a water fountain in the house!  Absolutely brilliant.

sarakitchen5

And I love the framed art above.

One of my favorite features of her home is their homeschool room.  And it’s not even finished yet in these pictures!  I already know I’m going to love it.  They wrote a lovely verse on the door frame of the room, and I can’t think of a better verse to to have chosen:

And look at the cool, funky flooring they chose for the room:

And from their lovely kitchen is a peek-a-boo window.

Check out Sara’s blog for the scoop to come on the rest of their now-completed house.  I know I’ll be storing every bit in my inspiration files.

Thanks Sara for a peek into your home!

SUNDAY POETRY: "AT THE FISHHOUSES"

(Credit: Little_DogPhotography at Flickr.)

AT THE FISHHOUSES
by Elizabeth Bishop
Although it is a cold evening,
down by one of the fishhouses
an old man sits netting,
his net, in the gloaming almost invisible,
a dark purple-brown,
and his shuttle worn and polished.
The air smells so strong of codfish
it makes one’s nose run and one’s eyes water.
The five fishhouses have steeply peaked roofs
and narrow, cleated gangplanks slant up
to storerooms in the gables
for the wheelbarrows to be pushed up and down on.
All is silver: the heavy surface of the sea,
swelling slowly as if considering spilling over,
is opaque, but the silver of the benches,
the lobster pots, and masts, scattered
among the wild jagged rocks,
is of an apparent translucence
like the small old buildings with an emerald moss
growing on their shoreward walls.
The big fish tubs are completely lined
with layers of beautiful herring scales
and the wheelbarrows are similarly plastered
with creamy iridescent coats of mail,
with small iridescent flies crawling on them.
Up on the little slope behind the houses,
set in the sparse bright sprinkle of grass,
is an ancient wooden capstan,
cracked, with two long bleached handles
and some melancholy stains, like dried blood,
where the ironwork has rusted.
The old man accepts a Lucky Strike.
He was a friend of my grandfather.
We talk of the decline in the population
and of codfish and herring
while he waits for a herring boat to come in.
There are sequins on his vest and on his thumb.
He has scraped the scales, the principal beauty,
from unnumbered fish with that black old knife,
the blade of which is almost worn away.

Down at the water’s edge, at the place
where they haul up the boats, up the long ramp
descending into the water, thin silver
tree trunks are laid horizontally
across the gray stones, down and down
at intervals of four or five feet.

Cold dark deep and absolutely clear,
element bearable to no mortal,
to fish and to seals . . . One seal particularly
I have seen here evening after evening.
He was curious about me. He was interested in music;
like me a believer in total immersion,
so I used to sing him Baptist hymns.
I also sang “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.”
He stood up in the water and regarded me
steadily, moving his head a little.
Then he would disappear, then suddenly emerge
almost in the same spot, with a sort of shrug
as if it were against his better judgment.
Cold dark deep and absolutely clear,
the clear gray icy water . . . Back, behind us,
the dignified tall firs begin.
Bluish, associating with their shadows,
a million Christmas trees stand
waiting for Christmas. The water seems suspended
above the rounded gray and blue-gray stones.
I have seen it over and over, the same sea, the same,
slightly, indifferently swinging above the stones,
icily free above the stones,
above the stones and then the world.
If you should dip your hand in,
your wrist would ache immediately,
your bones would begin to ache and your hand would burn
as if the water were a transmutation of fire
that feeds on stones and burns with a dark gray flame.
If you tasted it, it would first taste bitter,
then briny, then surely burn your tongue.
It is like what we imagine knowledge to be:
dark, salt, clear, moving, utterly free,
drawn from the cold hard mouth
of the world, derived from the rocky breasts
forever, flowing and drawn, and since
our knowledge is historical, flowing, and flown.

In my humble opinion this is simply one of the best poems ever written.

The long middle section of DEEP BLUE HOME takes place mostly in Newfoundland, with its extinct cod fishery and pilot whale "fishery," its capelin fishery, and the wonderful seabirds of Cape Saint Mary's. Elizabeth Bishop's poem reminds me of that world.

The poem also reminds me of Pete, the harbor seal from Monterey, a friendly guy who visited divers up close and personal back in the 1980s. (Does he still?) I liked him so much I made a sincere effort to cut him into every single film I ever made, no matter how long a stretch it might be to have, say, a California harbor seal appear in a film about coral reefs. I still remember his cameo lived on videotape #113 in my stock footage library. Lori, if you're reading this, you might remember that too.

RANDOM EXCERPT: BIOLUMINESCENCE

Photo by Phil Hart. And, by the way, well worth a visit to his website for his explanation of the complex factors that led to this photograph. Plus more really beautiful images of bioluminescence.
I wrote about bioluminescence, the brilliant aurora stirred by motion in the nighttime sea, in THE FRAGILE EDGE. Here's an excerpt:
The light show we observe near the surface, at least as we understand it, is produced largely by the dinoflagellates—those unicellular plants possessing microscopic whiplike tails that enable them to move, however slightly, this way and that. Large creatures such as you or me or a spinner dolphin will activate billions of these bioluminescent plants as we move through the surface layer of the nighttime waters. Even small zooplankton, for instance, the predatory krill traveling on their swimmerets, will find themselves spotlighted.
As to why plants in the sea produce bioluminescence, a hypothesis known as the burglar alarm theory postulates that the chemical production of light acts as a visual siren: the plants turn on their lights when their predators (for example, krill) are in motion, illuminating them so that their predators (for example, lanternfish) can catch the krill and eat them first.
Tricksy.

You can read a classic science paper on the phenomenon:
Mark V. Abrahams and Linda D. Townsend. Bioluminescence in Dinoflagellates: A Test of the Burglar Alarm Hypothesis (pdf). Ecology, Vol. 74, No. 1 (Jan., 1993), pp. 258-260

Photo from here.
More about bioluminescence from THE FRAGILE EDGE, an excerpt about sailing the Pacific one stormy winter:

In the trough between the swells, an incandescent waterfall of radiance tumbled from the wave breaking directly ahead. Time and again, we sailed into this cascade, which outlined the bow of the sailboat in a vibrating aura of electric blue and electric green. Behind us, our wake writhed like an aquamarine serpent before fading from view over the precipice of the receding wave.
Most nights schools of dolphins—generally common dolphins (Delphinus delphis)—arrived seemingly out of nowhere to ride our bow-wave. Alone on watch in the open-air cockpit, I would glimpse a streak of blueish-green heading towards the bow, looking for all the world like a torpedo until it porpoised through the surface to breathe. The first streak was invariably followed by others, sometimes dozens, all racing across the beam, carving glowing turns before settling into bow-riding position: on their sides, tail flukes nearly touching the bow as it hobby-horsed through the swells. No matter how violent the action of the bow, the dolphins held fast in their position, their bodies outlined in the pulsing blue light of an underwater St. Elmo’s fire.
Common dolphins were not the only cetaceans we encountered in the course of these bioluminescent nights. We also came upon migrating gray whales headed for their breeding lagoons on the western coast of the Baja Peninsula. Their bioluminescent wakes mimicked the wakes of boats. If conditions were right, when the whales blew, the plugs of water covering their blowholes flared into faint, blue-green mists of luminous organisms, as if the behemoths were exhaling pixie dust.

THE JELLYFISH NEBULA

(Image Credit & Copyright: Bob Franke)

From APOD:
Normally faint and elusive, the Jellyfish Nebula is caught in this alluring, false-color, telescopic view. Flanked by two bright stars, Mu and Eta Geminorum, at the foot of a celestial twin, the Jellyfish Nebula is the brighter arcing ridge of emission with dangling tentacles below and right of center. In fact, the cosmic jellyfish is seen to be part of bubble-shaped supernova remnant IC 443, the expanding debris cloud from a massive star that exploded. Light from the explosion first reached planet Earth over 30,000 years ago. Like its cousin in astrophysical waters the Crab Nebula supernova remnant, IC 443 is known to harbor a neutron star, the remnant of the collapsed stellar core. Emission nebula Sharpless 249 fills the field at the upper left. The Jellyfish Nebula is about 5,000 light-years away. At that distance, this image would be about 300 light-years across. The color scheme used in the narrowband composite was made popular in Hubble Space Telescope images, mapping emission from oxygen, hydrogen, and sulfur atoms to blue, green and red colors.

Systems

Today, I wanted to talk about systems, and my love of them!

cups1

One of my favorite “mom” books is Meek and Quiet Spirit by Teri Maxwell.  In it she describes “robbers” that steal our joy as mothers.  It probably doesn’t come as any surprise, but disorganization is one of the robbers she lists.  I know for myself this is true. If ever I’m grumpy, I can usually pinpoint it to disorganization of some sort.

I think it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the overall mess, and lump it all together into one big blob.  Instead, what I’ve learned that has helped me, is ask myself what it is that’s exactly bothering me and then break it up into parts.

Is it that books are piled up on the furniture?  Toys on the steps?  Shoes in the hallway?  A hamper I always seem to be tripping over?  I name the problem and write it down.  Then I come up with a solution or system for that specific problem.

Sometimes the answer is really simple and doesn’t take any time at all.  For other things, it might take much trial and error before coming up with suitable system that works consistently.

For the past couple years, I’ve tried coming up with a solution to our drinking problem.  No worries… I’m not talking about that kind of drinking problem.  I’m talking about the kind where everyone gets a new cup every time they want something to drink.  Then they proceed to leave the glass on any surface they find convenient.  Then of course, the next time they get thirsty, the previously used cup cannot be located  and the cycle starts again.  Humph.

Wisteria has solved our drinking problem!  I found this caddy in their catalog, and promptly ordered.

cups2

It’s what I’ve been searching for all along.

cups3

Whenever our children are finished their drink, they rinse, and put the glass back in their spot.  Simple!  Problem solved.

cups4

And it’s cute.  That counts almost as much.

Bedroom for your little baby girl !

Having a baby is probably the most wonderful news for the parents, and it comes with a lot of preparation and anticipation. I have some wonderful ideas for parents who would love to do up a room for their baby. Because the design and color of the room would be soo vastly different for a baby girl or boy, I am taking it in different posts.

In this post I bring to you some beautiful ways to do up the room. I have done a post before..check it here; here I am showing some designs for a baby GIRL :D They are so precious the little ones that any amount of trouble is still little compared to the joy they bring.

Design in pretty pink with flowers.

What more could be more girlie than pink and pretty flowers. This is so beautiful with butterfly and flowers and lovely shades of pink to it. Go all out and pick up the favourite bits of fabric and design your own room with a little inspiration for this.

Break the monotony with brown and green.

Since pink is a choice by default for all little girl's room. How about using some more colors for a different look. This design is just that with the brown color on furniture, the brown butterfly print shows up beautifully. The green is so refreshing . In all a beautiful way to do up a room for a little cutie.

Pale green with pink and white

How pretty can it get? Pale green to offset white and pink, and a dash of mellow yellow! The design is simple and pretty as it should be, for a little baby. Pink and green is used in various accents too. I love how the lamp shade has been customized. A great way to do up your own.

Too much pink ?

Pink can be a little too much, s how about ivory? or the palest shade of pink possible. This design is fun and cute and pretty and yet not too much of pink. The color red is dominant with a combination of green and blue. love the ruffles and the flowers on the wall.

A hint of Pink ?

Okay we might not like too much of pink maybe but a little hint of pink is still beautiful. This might be just the design for you. Its pretty and not too cluttered yet with the retro touch of circles and cute lamp, not to miss the adorable chair, this design does beg consideration. Love the almost zen affect in it.

Sheer purple with brown.

This might not be a conventional color combination for decorating a baby girl's room but beautiful it is. Purple and brown is a good combination for any area and here the detailing is such that it makes for a very attractive design. Love the itty bitty chandelier there, perfect for a little princess.

Having posted on ways to do up your little princess room I have to do another for the apple of your eye too; one for the little blue eyed boys :) Watch out for it.
